Movie Review: Piranha 3D (2010)
Synopsis: Already stretched to their limit by hundreds of college kids celebrating spring break, the Lake Victoria Sheriff's Department must deal with thousands of prehistoric piranha that have been released into the lake by an earthquake. To make matters worse, the sheriff's kids are also on the lake.
Who's in it? The movie stars Elisabeth Shue, Steven R. McQueen, Ving Rhames, Jerry O'Connell and Jessica Szohr.
Review: I came across this movie on Netflix some time ago but was hesitant to watch it. This is mostly because I've found movies about killer fish are largely hit or miss because, let's face it, all you have to do to escape them is get out of the water.
However, my wife and I (both suffering from a weekend-long bout of seasonal allergies) were trying to find something to watch yesterday evening and, since we couldn't decide on anything better, I decided to finally give the movie a chance. As it turns out, it was better than expected.
The thing that impressed me about this film was the way it managed to poke fun at the genre while, at the same time, still was entertaining to watch. Those prehistoric fish wasted no time devouring their prey (poor Richard Dreyfuss didn't last five minutes in this film). This meant, anytime anyone ended up in the water, there was a very good chance they would be a bloody corpse within a matter of seconds.
One scene that really stood out for me was when the swarm of fish found the spring breakers. That scene was pretty gruesome and memorable and definitely something that set it apart from many other horror films (that might hold back a little too much).
I'm still a bit undecided about the gratuitous nudity in this film. There was an awful lot of it and, normally, that would cause me to deduct points. But, as I said before, the movie was, at times at least, poking fun at the genre and I could easily fit the excessive nudity into that category. So, I think, for the time being at least, I'll just choose not to have an opinion about it but will warn you there is quite a bit of it.
Final Opinion: This movie was better than I expected and I did enjoy watching it. It's probably not going to be for everyone, especially since there is quite a bit of gore. However, if you can stomach the blood (and naked women), it's worth watching it once.
My Grade: B
