I Went Axe Throwing For the First Time
The restaurant we normally have our company Christmas party at closed down this year so we wound up looking for something different to do. After some discussion, this resulted in a trip to Milwaukee for an evening of axe throwing at Axe MKE.
If you haven't heard of it, it is pretty much what it sounds like. You throw axes (well, I would probably describe them more as hatchets). It's apparently becoming somewhat popular because there are axe throwing places popping up all over the state.
.This was originally my idea but I wasn't sure if it was going to be a good experience or not. In fact, my wife wasn't really all that keen on the idea when I told her what was planned. And, let's be honest, throwing sharp objects doesn't exactly sound like the safest way to spend your time, especially when drinking is involved. But, as it turns out, it was actually pretty fun.
First of all, as far as safety goes, I thought the rules in place to prevent injury were pretty reasonable. Basically, we were required to give the thrower quite a bit of room and the person throwing the axe was supposed to remain behind a line to lessen the chance of the axe bouncing back at them. That's not to say there wasn't still an element of danger. We did have a couple bounced axes fly past that safety line and I'm sure there's a first aid kit nearby for a reason. But, we all came out of it unscathed.
The actual throwing was actually a little more difficult than I expected, especially since we were supposed to use two hands. It took me several tries before I got one to stick and, even though I did manage to get a couple bullseyes, I think I had a lot more misses than hits. My wife, ironically, did slightly better than me after she got warmed up and seemed to enjoy herself a lot more than I'm sure she was expecting.
In fact, this is something I definitely would consider doing again (perhaps for our anniversary?) and would recommend it if you are looking for something fun and different to do with friends.
