Movie Review: Terrifier 2 (2022)

Synopsis: A year after Art the Clown went on a killing spree and was presumed dead, he re-emerges and focuses his attention on a brother and sister on Halloween night.

Who's in it? The movie stars Lauren LaVera, David Howard Thornton, Elliott Fullam, Sarah Voigt and Kailey Hyman.

Review: My wife and I re-watched the movie Terrifier a couple nights ago and decided we wanted to finally see the sequel, which was available on Peacock. While I admittedly had some doubts about Terrifier 2, despite enjoying the first film, it did end up being better than expected.

Much like the first movie, this film seemed to be more about gore than actual scares. However, it was one of the few times when I felt like it worked. Art the Clown (Thornton) brings a good mix of creepiness and entertainment and, unlike way too many movies in this genre, the film does a good job of keeping his origin story a mystery, something that makes him unpredictable.

Speaking of mysteries, the film has a couple good ones as well. There is a clear connection between Sienna (LaVera), her brother, Jonathan (Fullam) and Art through their father but the movie does a good job not revealing too much regarding that. Plus, that creepy clown girl (Amelie McLain) was just a strange addition because it was unclear why only Art and the two siblings could see her.

My biggest complaint about this movie, which my wife shared, was it does seem to drag on much longer than it needs to. The movie has a runtime of 2 hours and 18 minutes and I honestly think it could have been trimmed to around 90 minutes simply by cutting back on the scenes that had very little impact on the overall plot (and there were a lot of those).

Final Opinion: While maybe not quite a classic like Freddy Krueger or Michael Myers, Art the Clown is an intriguing enough character to make these movies entertaining to watch. I may have even put him higher on my list had this movie been slightly better edited so it didn't feel like it was taking an eternity to tell the story.

My Grade: B
