Movie Review: Crimes of Fashion: Killer Clutch (2024)
Synopsis: Freelance fashion psychologist Lauren Elliott is between jobs when her best friend, Charlotte, helps land her a consultant role at a French design company during Paris fashion week. However, following the runway show one of the company's executives is found murdered and Charlotte is arrested as the primary suspect. Determined to prove her friend's innocence, Lauren pairs up with a reluctant French detective, Andre, and attempts to find the real killer.
Who's in it? The movie stars Brooke D'Orsay, Gilles Marini, Francois Legrand, Paloma Coquant and Doug Rand.
Review: My wife and I decided not to do too much today after a long week and since we were on the couch anyway, attempted to get caught up on some of the Hallmark movies we've recorded but haven't watched yet. I was in the mood for a murder mystery and gave this one a try. Overall, while nothing too special, I thought it was a good choice.
There were a couple things I found I really enjoyed about this movie. One of the main ones was the murder mystery was a lot more complex than it originally seemed. Lauren's (D'Orsay) friend, Charlotte (Coquant) was found near the body, her fingerprints were on the weapon and every time Lauren seemed to find a lead or potential suspect to clear her friend's name, there would be an added twist that kept Charlotte in prison (though, to be fair, that prison seemed awfully comfortable).
Ultimately, I did end up correctly guessing the killer and motive, but I admittedly wasn't completely confident in my guess until the killer revealed themselves toward the very end. So, I'll give the movie some points for that as well.
I also liked how the movie was able to have a reasonably amount of chemistry between Lauren and Andre (Marini) without taking it to a point where I'd describe it as romantic. Even though it is a Hallmark movie and that would be something I would expect to see, I think the decision to keep the relationship platonic (with a hint of romantic tension) worked so much better with the plot. I mean it's a movie about a murder and a wrongfully arrested best friend, a romance would have seemed a bit inappropriate.
I did think the ending was a bit wonky because it didn't quite match what was shown in the opening scene to draw in the viewer. For example, I'm confident the killer in the early scene pulled the trigger at the gun pointed at Lauren but that didn't happen in the replay. Not to mention she seemed to recover from the trauma really quick, even for a psychologist who probably knew some tricks to overcome it faster. But as I said, it is a Hallmark movie, so I guess I should have expected that.
Final Opinion: As I said, it's not a movie I'd describe as overly special, but it still ended up being an OK choice with a solid murder mystery. At minimum it's a good choice for a lazy Saturday.
My Grade: B
