Movie Review: My Dreams of You (2024)

Synopsis: Grace McMahon's life isn't going the way she hoped. The book she wrote has been rejected by publishers while her office temp jobs are both unreliable and don't pay the bills. Her only solace is her dreams, which have been featuring Michael Roy, a person she doesn't know but yet seems so familiar to her. However, even that is about to be taken away from her because there was a mix-up at Dream Central and she's actually been experiencing his dreams, something the dream weavers in charge want to correct by erasing him from her memories, even as she locates Michael in real life, and they fall in love.

Who's in it? The movie stars Skyler SamuelsKapil Talwalkar, Cecilia Lee, David Rosser and Erica Deutschman.

Review: Our daughters were attending a community theater musical yesterday afternoon and since we both needed a break from our weekend projects, my wife and I decided to watch a movie together. It had been a while since we watched a Hallmark film and the previews for My Dreams of You prompted me to record it, so we gave it a try. Overall, it was an OK choice, though my opinion was somewhat mixed.

The whole Dream Central thing was a little goofy and raised more questions than it answered, such as why, if Grace (Samuels) was in Michael's (Talwalkar) dreams, she wasn't seeing things from his point of view. However, at the same time, it both added something a little unique while making the overall movie fun to watch.

As far as the romantic plot went, I thought Grace and Michael were a solid couple. There seemed to be a lot of chemistry between them, they had similar dreams and life obstacles, and it felt as spontaneous as it was supposed to seem. It felt like they started out as friends then quickly escalated into something more from there.

This in turn made the attempt to erase their memories all that much more impactful. On one hand, they were in love. On the other, as was indicated in the film, if they weren't supposed to meet, it could throw everything off in the grand scheme of things, including ending Michael's dreams of being a musician. Having them live more than 2200 miles away from each other was a nice touch in that regard as well, reducing the chances of them bumping into each other at random.

That said, while I didn't hate the ending, it did make me question why it was so important to fix the screw up and erase their memories in the first place. I won't give details to avoid spoilers, but I'll just say there are enough "cheats" involved to make that ending impossible without the whole dream mix-up and I'm not sure how that's any different than just choosing to let them be a happy couple.

Final Opinion: It's a Hallmark made-for-TV movie and as such, there are some basic expectations that were met. In other words, it's not a film that's going to be Oscar-worthy, and some parts were a little predictable, but it still proved to be a cute film that we enjoyed watching.

My Grade: B
