Thoughts From the Green Bay Packers at the Tennessee Titans (9/22/2024)
Some thoughts from yesterday's 30-14 Green Bay Packers' win at the Tennessee Titans:
Matt LaFleur proved he is an underrated coach. Despite his success since coming to Green Bay, LaFleur never seems to be in the Coach of the Year conversations. Going 2-0 with a backup quarterback that wasn't even here during the preseason should maybe change that.
You couldn't ask for better results. Green Bay could easily have been 0-3 after Jordan Love's injury but are 2-1 with an opportunity to claim the division lead with a win over the Minnesota Vikings next week. Oh, and there's a good chance Love will be able to play in that game.
I am excited by the Packers' run game. With Love out and the Titans knowing Green Bay was going to rely on the run again, the Packers still managed 115 yards, not counting the 73 Malik Willis picked up with his legs. Once Love is back and defenses need to account for his arm, that run game is only going to get better.
Speaking of Willis, I suspect he's not going to be a Green Bay Packer long. Now that he has demonstrated he can perform well in the right system, I think there will be trade calls for him during the offseason. I'm also wondering if maybe the Packers will find ways to get him involved in the offense after Love returns. He's proven he can do some real damage with his legs.
The defense is exciting to watch. Jeff Hafley is living up to the hype as defensive coordinator. While that side of the ball hasn't always been perfect, they made plays when they needed to and are taking the ball away. The latter is huge, especially since the team has already tied the number of interceptions it had all of last season.
The penalties are a concern. Ten penalties for 75 yards is just unacceptable, especially the holding penalties that wiped out some big gains. That's going to cost them wins against better teams.
The kicking woes continue as well. Officially, Brayden Narveson was perfect in the game on field goals and extra points. But that's only because another wide-right field goal attempt was wiped off the books because of a Titan's defensive holding penalty (one of only two their team committed). To his credit, he didn't miss any of the other kicks but it's still something that needs work. It was telling when the Packers opted to go for it on fourth down later in the game even though they were in range for a long field goal try.
