Simek's Italian Sausage Lasagna Review

I went into the grocery store yesterday evening with the mission of picking up something for dinner but also with very little idea about what I actually wanted for dinner. After placing multiple items in my cart only to return them to the shelf a short while later, I finally gave in and went to the freezer section for something simple. Lasagna sounded good and I hadn't tried the Simek's Italian Sausage yet, so I picked one up.

This was a bit more expensive than the brand I originally considered. However, I was intrigued by the promise of freshly made pasta and no preservatives. Plus, according to the back of the box, they donate one meal for every one purchased. After making it in the microwave and giving it a try, I even decided it wasn't too bad.

The lasagna clearly was a pre-made frozen product and there would be no way to mistake this from something homemade or even prepared at a restaurant. I'd even go as far as to say the frozen nature of the final product also probably negated the whole "freshly made pasta" thing. That said, I did think the lasagna had a decent flavor to it, with just the right quantity of seasonings and I enjoyed eating it as a result.

I also thought the lasagna was filling. I purchased this with the plan of having leftovers for lunch and, as I had hoped, I had plenty. Of course, that was only because I was the only one who ate this one (I bought my wife and kids their own dinners). Otherwise, I think there would only be enough for maybe two people.

My only real complaint was, for a lasagna that advertised Italian sausage, I thought it could have used a lot more of that ingredient. Most bites seemed to be just sauce and pasta. Also, like most frozen lasagnas I've eaten, it could have used at least another layer of cheese as well. Considering it was more expensive; I don't think those are unreasonable asks.

Final Opinion: It's a pre-made frozen product and you shouldn't expect this to replace anything you make yourself. However, for a frozen lasagna, I do think it is a brand that is worth purchasing if you are looking for convenience and want something reasonably good.

My Grade: B
