Movie Review: A Kismet Christmas (2022)

Synopsis: Sarah used to spend the holidays with her grandmother, Mia, who was known for her Kismet cookies, a family recipe of magical cookies that would make you dream about the person you should be with if you put them under your pillow on Christmas Eve. However, after Sarah tried the magic for herself and dreamt about her long-time crush, Travis, only to find out he was getting married the next day, she tore up the recipe and her grandmother never baked them again. Years later, Sarah has a hit book loosely based on the Kismet cookie legend and is struggling to finish a sequel when a contest results in her returning to her grandmother's hometown and reconnecting with a now-divorced Travis and his daughter, Jasmine. Not long after, she begins to wonder if the cookies really were magical.

Who's in it? The movie stars Sarah Ramos, Carlo Marks, Marilu Henner, Rubi Tupper and Zahf Paroo.

Review: We've had A Kismet Christmas in our library for some time now, but it wasn't a movie that I was overly interested in watching, at least when there were other options available. I finally decided to give it a chance last night and after seeing it, I have to admit it ended up being a surprisingly good film.

I'm not going to lie; the plot of this movie isn't anything overly complicated and is more than a little predictable. Everything from what would happen between Sarah (Ramos) and Travis (Marks) to the secret her Grandma Mia (Henner) were easy to figure out and there wasn't any point in the movie where the ending would come into question.

That said, there was a lot to love about this film. For me, I think the chemistry between the two romantic leads was excellent. It was easy to tell the two characters were long-time friends with a lot of history and probably the only question about them was why they weren't romantically involved sooner. In fact, if anything, their connection only made me wonder why Travis married another woman to begin with since it was pretty clear he was in love with Sarah even when she was still a teenager.

The part about the cookies was also intriguing, including the mystery surrounding their magic. I think the thing I liked best about that part was easy to question if the magic was real since most people who used them already had someone they were interested in (Sarah, for instance, was already in love with Travis when she dreamt about him). However, there were also clues the magic went far beyond that.

In fact, my only real complaint about the movie is I wish the cookies would have played more of a role in it than they did. Maybe Hallmark will correct that problem someday by having a prequel film.

Final Opinion: As I said before, this is a simple movie with a predictable plot. However, this is also one of those rare movies that made it work. It's a warm, feel-good movie that is perfect for the holiday season.

My Grade: A
