Movie Review: Twisters (2024)

Synopsis: While trying to earn her doctorate in meteorology, Kate conducts an experiment she believes will cause a tornado to break up, minimizing the damage it causes. She misjudges the size of the tornado in the experiment, resulting in the death of three of her friends, and takes a desk job in New York instead of chasing tornados. Five years later, her friend, Javi, asks her to help him with a tornado mapping experiment and she reluctantly agrees to do it. However, when she learns the real purpose for Javi's experiment, she soon teams up with a rival, Tyler, to try to revive her original idea.

Who's in it? The movie stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea and Maura Tierney.

Review: If there's anything I doubt more than an unnecessary movie sequel, it's a movie reboot. That's why when I learned about Twisters, I wasn't sure if it was a movie I would want to see. However, my youngest daughter saw it with a friend and enjoyed it. So, even though we don't normally have the same taste in movies, I decided to give the film a try when I came across it on Peacock.

As it turns out, it was quite a bit better than I was expecting it to be.

There are two kinds of reboots - those that acknowledge the movie(s) that came before it and those that don't. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. This film finds a happy balance by not directly referencing 1996's Twister but slipping in an Easter egg or two to show the film at least takes place in the same universe.

I also liked the role reversal the movie throws in, with Kate (Edgar-Jones) and Javi (Ramos) being the ones working for a company trying to make a profit with their main rival, Tyler (Powell), being more of the "good guy" by comparison. I liked how the film slowly added depth to Tyler, revealing he was more than just a guy trying to get YouTube hits by "wrangling" tornados, making the inevitable sexual tension between him and Kate more believable.

As is the case with most disaster movies, some scenes were a bit overly dramatic and over the top. Plus, like the original, the audience is expected to suspend belief a bit when the main characters are capable of outrunning tornadoes on foot and so-called tornado experts run/drive straight ahead rather than trying to get out of its path. However, movies are supposed to be entertaining, not necessarily accurate, and this film met that criterion.

Final Opinion: I enjoyed this movie a lot more than expected and was entertained from start to finish. It was a reboot that did it right.

My Grade: A
