Luke Getsy is an Obvious Choice for Packers' QB Coach Vacancy

Earlier this week, Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur announced long-time assistant coach Tom Clements is retiring after serving as quarterbacks coach for Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love. Clements' history of success developing passers will leave a void on the roster. Fortunately for Green Bay, they may already have his replacement.

After first being brought to Green Bay in 2006 under former coach Mike McCarthy, Clements only spent 3 years away from the team, from 2017 through 2021, which included time with the Arizona Cardinals and some years when he didn't coach at all

The guy who filled three years of that gap was Getsy and he built a resume that justifies bringing him back.

Currently a Packers' consultant after recently being fired by the Las Vegas Raiders, Getsy's attempts at being an offensive coordinator/play caller both with the Raiders and Chicago Bears were arguably a disappointment. However, it was his time as Packers' quarterback coach and passing game coordinator that earned him the offensive coordinator opportunities with good reason.

Rodgers' three-year stint with Getsy as his QB coach is eye-opening. He set a career high mark in touchdown passes in 2020 with 48 and averaged 4,138 passing yards per season. Over the course of those three years, he threw a total of 111 touchdowns against just 13 interceptions and had an average passer rating of 109.6.

It's worth noting Rodgers had what was arguably his worst year statistically when Getsy left, and Clements returned in 2022, throwing for just 3695 yards and 26 touchdown passes in 17 games. He also had 12 interceptions, only one less than he had in the three previous Getsy seasons combined.

Of course, I'll be the first to admit signing Getsy as QB coach is far from a given. LaFleur may be interested in bringing in someone from outside the organization or might promote Connor Lewis, who served as the assistant quarterbacks coach this past season and learned from Clements. Getsy himself may want to try to land another offensive coordinator position (perhaps even with the Packers if current OC Adam Stenavich is offered a head coaching job).

However, if things line up where Getsy is available and willing to return to his former role, it's something LaFleur should strongly consider.
