Movie Review: The Watchers (2024)

Synopsis: Mina, an American living in Ireland and working at a pet shop, is given the task of transporting a parrot to a zoo in Belfast. On the way there, her car breaks down in a forest and she encounters a group of three living in a bunker. Accepting shelter, she learns they are being watched through a two-way mirror by a supernatural entity that will kill them if they try to escape.

Who's in it? The movie stars Dakota Fanning, Georgina CampbellOlwen Fouéré, Oliver Finnegan and John Lynch.

Review: After my wife spent most of the afternoon attempting to sew and outfit and failing due to mechanical issues with her Serger, I decided to help take her mind off it by finding a movie to watch while we had dinner. I had quite a few doubts about The Watchers but decided to give it a try anyway.

My biggest concern about this movie was it would end up being extremely slow-paced and dull as a result. As it turns out, while the pacing was as I expected it to be, the film still proved to be much more entertaining than I would have thought.

The biggest thing, for me, was the mystery surrounding the creatures that were watching them. What were they? Why were they so interested in watching humans? Who was Dr. Kilmartin (Lynch) and why did he build the bunker? My wife and I had some theories, mostly based on the movie being produced by M. Night Shyamalan and directed by his daughter Ishana, but the film does a great job keeping most of its secrets until the very end, with a good twist before it is completely over.

As far as acting was concerned, I thought the cast was solid. It's not always easy making a movie with just a few characters but the four worked well together. Mina (Fanning) was the rebellious one who wasn't afraid to break rules, Ciara (Campbell) was the optimistic one who was destined to have her heart broken, Daniel (Finnegan) was a bit of a wild card because of his youth and occasional rashness while Madeline (Fouéré) was the cool-headed one who also clearly wasn't telling the full truth. It was just enough of a combination to make it easy to question if they would be able to work together or if they would eventually try to sacrifice each other for their own benefit.

My biggest complaint about the movie is the ending did drag on longer than it needed to. It was one of those situations where there were two or three times when it could have had a solid finish only for the movie to still continue. It wasn't anything that necessarily ruined the movie, but it did have me questioning if the film was over yet.

Final Opinion: There's not a lot of action in this movie but there are just enough mysteries to keep the film interesting despite of that. It's worth taking the time to watch if you get an opportunity to.

My Grade: B
