Movie Review: Reptile (2023)

Synopsis: When real estate agent Summer Elswick is found murdered inside a house she was showing, Detective Tom Nichols is assigned to investigate the case and discovers a wide range of suspects that include her ex-husband and area drug dealers. However, as he investigates further, he discovers there is a whole lot more going on in the rural Maine town he and his wife, Judy, recently began calling home.

Who's in it? The movie stars Benicio Del Toro, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Silverstone, Eric Bogosian and Frances Fisher.

Review: With the winter weather limiting what we were able to do this weekend, my wife and I watched multiple movies. Some we enjoyed. Others, like Reptile, weren't as good as we expected them to be.

As is the case with many movies in this genre, the premise wasn't terrible, but the execution needed a bit of work, at least in my opinion. Simply put, for a movie about a murder investigation that potentially includes a community-wide conspiracy, it was kind of dull.

I think the biggest problem with this film was the mystery surrounding Summer's (Matilda Lutz) murder wasn't all that hard to figure out. We were literally 20 minutes into the movie, and I was able to finger the killer. Even the surprise twists weren't all that surprising and we were able to tell exactly who Det. Nichols (Del Toro) shouldn't be trusting.

I will say I did enjoy watching Nichols and his wife (Silverstone) because they seemed like such a great couple on screen, with her being treated as a partner/equal even though Nichols was the main character in the movie. The revelation about how they wound up living in Maine was also interesting, which ironically made this film seem even worse because it sounded like something that would make a much more interesting movie.

Final Opinion: It's not an awful movie but it is a film that is very predictable and probably could have been shortened by at least a half hour without impacting the storyline by a whole lot. I was glad we were able to find better films, so we didn't completely ruin our snow-related lazy Saturday.

My Grade: C
