Movie Review: Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Synopsis: Five years after Thanos erased half the universe's population before destroying the Infinity Stones, the surviving Avengers are beginning to accept what happened and move on with their lives. However, when Scott Lang/Ant-Man returns after being trapped in the Quantum Realm, he comes back with a plan, travel back in time to retrieve the stones so they can undo what Thanos did. There's just one problem; an earlier version of Thanos has figured out the plan.
Who's in it? The movie stars Robert Downey, Jr., Paul Rudd, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth.
Review: My wife and I binge watched the various Avenger movies a few years ago but stopped one short and never took the time to watch Avengers: Endgame, mostly because we couldn't find time to slip a 3-hour-long film into our schedule. We finally decided to do that yesterday evening and weren't disappointed.
With very few exceptions, movies that are longer than 2 hours rarely need to be. This film would be one of those few exceptions. The story is complex enough to justify needing to dedicate time to explaining the plan, developing the time machine and carryout all the components of their mission. Along the way, there were a lot of interesting plot points, ranging from Tony Stark (Downey, Jr.) now having a daughter to Steve Rogers (Evans) being reminded of what he left behind. Plus, the Avenger versus Avenger battles between the various characters running into earlier versions of themselves were admittedly entertaining.
I liked the added twist of Nebula (Karen Gillan) being connected to her earlier version, allowing Thanos (Josh Brolin) to see his future and learn of their plan. It was an unexpected development (that I'm a bit surprised Nebula didn't realize could happen) that led to a wild final battle.
This film was surprisingly emotional for an action movie. There are likable characters killed and as a result of that, the movie has everything from laughs to tears and happy moments with sad tears.
The only negative, other than maybe a bit too much CGI, was the fact we didn't re-watch at least a couple of the later Avenger movies before watching this one. While I remembered enough to understand the plot, I was often confused about who some of the characters were, especially since half of them didn't even show up until the very end. Maybe next time they make a movie like this, they'll include name tags.
Final Opinion: It took us a while to see the movie, but it turned out to be worth the wait. Just don't watch it without watching the earlier films first.
My Grade: A
