Doctor Who Episode Review: Rogue (2024)

Synopsis: While attending a 19th Century British ball, the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) must confront a group of alien shapeshifters, known as the Chuldur, who are killing off and impersonating guests as part of a Bridgerton cosplay. Helping the Doctor is a bounty hunter by the name of Rogue (Jonathan Groff), who also becomes a love interest for the time traveler.

Review: The new season of Doctor Who just started so my wife and I made an effort to get caught up this past weekend, starting with Rogue. Overall, I think I can say I enjoyed this one.

The main plot is a little confusing because the cosplay alien idea doesn't make a ton of sense if you think too much about it. I would assume the Chuldur aren't time travelers because, if that was a common alien technology, the Doctor wouldn't be anything special. Yet, unless I misunderstood something, they were cosplaying a 21st century show in the 19th century.

That said, I did like the idea of aliens that would kill to assume a new shape. Adding to that was it wasn't always clear which people were real people or Chuldur, leading to a couple surprises. Plus, at least for a while (not that I was overly concerned), it looked like Ruby was one of their victims.

My opinion is a bit mixed when it comes to Rogue. He seems like an intriguing character and the episode set up a storyline that will likely ensure we'll see him again. However, the love interest angle did seem a bit forced to me.

The Doctor has never been a character who falls in love easily. Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) was his companion for quite some time before he showed any signs of having romantic feelings for her. River Song (Alex Kingston) was a storyline that spanned several seasons and three Doctors. Male or female, that first kiss just didn't seem earned.

Final Opinion: It's an interesting episode that set up a possible romantic story between the Doctor and Rogue. However, while I did enjoy watching it, I do think it could have used a bit more sprucing up.

My Grade: B-
